Periodontics

Periodontics done by our dentist Dr. WeesnerYour teeth are an important part of your oral health—there is no denying that. It is also important to note that your mouth and your jaw are also important when it comes to ensuring that you maintain a good level of oral health. Without these things, your teeth mean very little. And sometimes, you can have amazing and healthy teeth, but still have a jaw that is misaligned and creates misery. When this happens, it is important to visit a periodontist who can help you determine where the problem lies and how you can fix it. At Fusion Dental Specialists, we are experienced in the field of periodontics and are happy to help meet with you in order to determine how best to fix the issues you are experiencing with your oral health.

What is periodontics?

Periodontics is a form of dentistry that is concerned with the structures that support and surround your teeth. This means things like the mouth itself and the surrounding jawbone, for example, which includes your gums, your cementum, the periodontal ligament, and the alveolar bone. It is worth noting that a periodontist is a specialist in their field who have not only completed schooling in dentistry, but have also gone through at least three years of training in preventing, diagnosing, and treating periodontal disease. That means that they understand what they are doing and have an in-depth understanding regarding your periodontal structures that other dentists might not have.

What does periodontal treatment consist of?

Given the amount of their extra schooling in this area, you will probably not be surprised to hear that periodontists spend a large amount of their time diagnosing and treating things like gum disease, including the bleeding and the inflammation of the gums. It is important to note that gum disease is a serious and chronic condition that can have incredibly detrimental side effects if left untreated. That means that you should see a periodontist immediately if you are showing any kind of abnormal signs or symptoms in your mouth or gums.

If you do end up diagnosed with gum disease, then you will need to have periodontics treatment to help keep your mouth as healthy as possible despite the issues that gum disease can cause. This means that you will need to have things like root planing, scaling, and other non-surgical treatments in order to maintain as healthy a mouth as possible.

Can periodontics help me?

Depending upon the issue at hand, it is quite likely that periodontics can help you. If you find yourself in need of some help when it comes to things like tooth decay or gum loss, you will probably find a periodontist to be quite useful and helpful, indeed. They can help you assess your treatment options and weigh the pros and cons of each with you before you decide upon one method or another.
