Sedation![]() Oral (Conscious) SedationOral sedation dentistry allows our doctors to create a safe and comfortable dental experience for patients who avoid the dentist out of fear. With sedation, our dentists can work more effectively by helping you become as comfortable as possible using well established and proven methods. There are a variety of sedation medications that are taken orally or "sublingually" (under the tongue). All sedation medicines are administered at our offices, under the care of an assistant. This type of dental care does require that you have a driver to bring you home from your appointment, as it takes several hours for the medication to completely wear off. IV Sedation and General AnesthesiaIV (intravenous) sedation and general anesthesia are administered through the vein directly to the bloodstream. This allows medications to take effect more quickly. Because the administration of these types of sedation is a little more serious, we typically reserve them for complex or lengthy procedures like oral surgery. The IV sedation will place you on the edge of consciousness, with little or no recollection of the procedure. General anesthesia places you completely under and usually requires the supervision of an anesthesiologist. Both of these forms require you to arrange a ride with a friend or family member following your appointment. |
