Meet Our PeriodontistsTed Weesner, DDS, MS![]() Dr. Weesner was raised in Texas and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. Satisfying his desire to travel and see other parts of the world, he attended the University Of Minnesota School of Dentistry and graduated with a Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree. He joined the US Navy in order to travel further and received more advanced training in a hospital-based General Practice Residency at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. For the next few years he served as a general dentist, providing care for the Navy and Marine Corps and other service members in Okinawa, Thailand and South Texas. This included a remote assignment providing care for refugees in Cuba. While still on active duty, he completed a Periodontal Residency Program at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. Dr. Weesner finished his career with the Navy at Whidbey Island, Washington, and moved to Portland starting a solo practice in West Linn in 2003. He then joined with his wife, Dr. Reva Barewal, a prosthodontist, to found Fusion Dental Specialists at its current location. Since 2012 he is a provider at the Portland VA Medical Center where he provides periodontal and implant care for veterans, an experience he finds highly rewarding. In addition to clinical care Dr. Weesner has performed research in the bioactivity of bone grafting materials and growth factors as well as in implant stability and early implant loading. His varied career and his experience working with both specialists and general dentists have given him vast experience in managing complex care and working with other providers to find the best solutions to sometimes challenging treatment. His patient-first approach means he works with people to find the solution that works best for the individual needs of each patient. Dr. Weesner is a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, the Academy of Osseointegration, the West Coast Society of Periodontists, the American Dental Association and the Clackamas County Dental Society. He spends much of his free time helping Reva to raise their brilliant high-schoolers, Shail and Jasmine. He loves the outdoors including cycling, running and hiking. Lillian Nguyen, DMD, MS![]() Prior to her dental education, her background includes a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Portland. Dr. Nguyen then obtained her Doctorate in Dental Medicine from Oregon Health & Science University in 2017, and then received a Certificate in Periodontics and Master of Science in Periodontics from OHSU in 2020. In addition to clinical training at OHSU, her research focused on the role of dental plaque bacteria in the early development of peri-implant diseases, and aims to identify the optimal interface between implants and crowns that may lead to prevention of peri-implantitis. Her research is currently in preparation for publication to peer-reviewed journals and will be presented nationally and internationally. During her periodontal residency at OHSU, Dr. Nguyen treated patients from diverse cultural backgrounds, and with various levels of complexity in dental needs, ranging from simple to highly complex esthetic cases requiring multidisciplinary care. As part of her training, she also regularly provided care to veterans at the Portland VA Medical Center, which greatly enhanced her experience in managing patients with extremely complex medical histories. Dr. Nguyen is proficient in the utilization of a fully digital workflow for dental implant surgical planning, ensuring precise implant placement and minimally invasive, short surgical appointments. Her specialty allows for close collaboration with general practitioners as well as other specialists, resulting in optimized comprehensive care for patients.
